For a number of years now, Peter has been YGFA's exclusive inhouse provider for rod and reel repairs/maintenance for all of our event and personal use equipment. YGFA strongly believe off the shelf high end products on the market can not compare to the customisation Peter's products afford both mechanically and asthetically.
Peter began fishing at the age of 2 due to his fathers addiction to the sport. Along with fishing, his father was also a passionate, highly skilled mechanic; Peter recounts his father as a man with the finest mechanical brain on the planet. Peter was destined to follow in his footsteps. In 1985 he began working every school holidays and weekends in the automotive trade from the age of 10. He commenced full time work in the automotive trade at the end of 1993 having graduated the HSC with a 1st place nationally two years running in the joint schools TAFE program in automotive (JSST). His father passed down lessons in both fishing and mechanics learned from the old school. Memories shared of his mother and his grandfather fishing were especially cherished. Peter would relish bedtime and the stories his father told him of his Great Grandfather Poppy and Poppy's handlines catching huge bream and jewfish from the Hawkesbury river. The putt putt boats, as they were called then, timber hulls and single cylinder inboards and the seasickness off longreef in those most inadequate craft. Hand lining Kingfish in seas worthy of boats twice there size. Fighting stingrays for hours just to be horrified at the end result. |
Over the following few years since entering the automotive industry Peter achieved qualifications in Automotive light vehicles, Marine, Heavy Vehicles and Plant plus Welding, Fitting and Machining and Automotive electrical. Graduating TAFE in 1996 with Honours as first place for years 1, 2 and 3 and nationally 1st place overall in all applications.
By this stage the fishing bug was stirring in a big way as career had allowed little time for everything else.
He took the leap and started work, part time in a tackle store around 2002. Having spent every waking moment either fishing or reading about fishing or talking about fishing to anybody that would listen. he had every VHS video tape that existed that was fishing related.
He recalls when he was young, he had talked his mother into newsagent subscriptions to fishing publications and once he had started work and can afford it, was buying every fishing related publication on the market. Reading, talking and absorbing information about fishing was his focus when not physically fishing. Fishing back then for Peter was mostly “bait “ related however his interest in lure fishing had begun much earlier at the hands of his father, when one day fish schools appeared off the beach at longreef. He watched in awe as his father hurled metal “spinners” from his beach rod and seascape reel. He notes his addiction to lure fishing truly started on a trip to Long tom at Forster where he caught a silver perch in a farm dam on a “Floppy”.
Since then, Peter has been blessed to be able to fish extensively across Australia chasing a diverse range of salt and freshwater species . He has also fished extensively in New Zealand, Fiji and Thailand thus far with many other destinations on the wishlist.
Career wise, in addition to being a qualified tradesman with a whole host of trade related qualifications under his belt like Fitting and Machining, Welding, Electrical etc. and his day job at the tackle store, an opportunity arose to also begin teaching Automotive Engineering at NSW Tafe Colleges. He was notably the youngest trades teacher in our states history (NSW).
In time, I he found himself managing a tackle store and one day his mechanical skills and fishing aptitude presented the perfect career opportunity he readily accepted. Becoming the Manager of the service department of a major Australian fishing tackle distributor, Peter had found his dream career.
After many years of service in this role, he found himself believing there was more he could create using his skills that was not included in the scope of the distribution companies product lines. He recognised outside of the internal offerings of some Australian distributors of fishing equipment servicing or repairing their own products under warranty claims, their was little on offer for the public that provided regular equipment maintenance options and customization of reels and rods. He decided it was time to take the plunge and start his own business dedicated to exactly that. He is now the owner/operator of the largest business in Australia offering these services and custom products. His work is highly acclaimed and respected by his peers so much so he is regularly invited by his old employer at the distribution company to offer his expertise as a consultant and contractor services.
